PALO ALTO, November 1, 2018 –– People Centered Internet celebrates the election of Doreen Bogdan-Martin to lead the United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Bureau of Telecommunication Development (BDT) and looks forward to welcoming her to Silicon Valley on December 10.
ITU’s Leadership elections occurred at the Plenipotentiary Conference in Dubai. With votes from 93 countries, Bogdan-Martin is the first woman to be elected to one of the five leadership positions in the ITU’s 153-year history.
Since 2008, Bogdan-Martin served as chief of the ITU’s Strategic Planning and Membership Department. She is the most senior-ranked woman at the ITU, and her track record includes coordinating the UN Broadband Commission and launching EQUALS, the ITU’s new gender empowerment initiative.
“Doreen Bogdan-Martin’s election to lead the Development agency of the International Telecommunication Union is a major milestone in the history of this important institution. We at PCI are very pleased by this outcome and look forward to her inspired leadership,” said Vint Cerf, PCI Chairman.
PCI co-founder, Mei Lin Fung, said, “The People Centered Internet is proud to have actively supported Doreen Bogdan-Martin’s historic election as the first woman in over 150 years to be part of the ITU’s elected leadership team. Her commitment to inclusion is a major pillar of her work that we can convert to action in every country and for every community. Doreen understands that there is a role for the Internet in expanding social and economic opportunity for all.
