SUMMARY:Roundtable: Advancing Maternal and Fetal Health through POCUS Training and Certification
DESCRIPTION:This roundtable will focus on certifying primary maternal health clinicians in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) as a key strategy to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of significantly reducing maternal mortality by 2030 \n\n\n\nThe discussion will address the disparities in maternal and child health services across different economic segments in low-income countries\, underscoring the urgency of expanding ultrasound training and certification. \n\n\n\nThe availability of affordable ultrasound equipment has surpassed healthcare providers’ training capabilities\, emphasising the necessity for enhanced training and certification to ensure patient safety. Expanding ultrasound proficiency among clinicians improves coverage of this vital intervention and enhances the quality and access to maternal care. \n\n\n\nThe initiative advocates for comprehensive policy shifts and standardised guidelines to extend clinicians’ practice scope\, recognising midwives\, nurses\, and clinical officers for their roles in obstetric ultrasound screenings. \n\n\n\nThe roundtable will explore integrating public-private partnerships and promoting local capacity building\, economic innovation\, and professional development opportunities for healthcare providers\, as well as the role advanced technologies can play in providing more equitable access for all. \n\n\n\nFor more than 45 years\, Inteleos has defined excellence through quality patient care and certification. Inteleos is the governing and managing organization for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography® (ARDMS®)\, the Alliance for Physician Certification & Advancement™ (APCA™)\, and the Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Certification Academy™. \n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\nSean Kelly Member of the European Parliament\, Belgium \n\n\n\nPamela Ruiz Chief Business Development Officer\, Inteleos\, USA \n\n\n\nByron Bitanihirwe Science for Africa Foundation\, Kenya \n\n\n\nCynthia Whitney MD\, MPH\, Principal Investigator & Executive Director\, Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance Network (CHAMPS)\, Emory Global Health Institute\, USA \n\n\n\nBleddyn Rees Chair\, The Digital Health Society\, UK \n\n\n\nZisis Kozlakidis World Health Organization\, International Agency for Research on Cancer\, France \n\n\n\nMei Linn Fung Co-Chair\, People-Centered Internet\, USA \n\n\n\nDale Cyr CEO\, Inteleos\, USA \n\n\n\nDeclan Kirrane Chairman\, Science Summit a UNGA79 (Moderator)

SUMMARY:IEEE MILESTONE CELEBRATION | THE OFFICE OF THE FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:This triple IEEE Milestone dedication will celebrate the creation of three world-changing technologies: the Alto personal computer\, Ethernet\, and the Laser Printer. These were invented and put into everyday use at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in the 1970s. What was then called “the Office of Future” is now commonplace throughout the world. \n\n\n\nPARC is now part of SRI\, and this PARC Forum will be hosted by SRI’s CEO Dr. David Parekh. It will include conversations with Vint Cerf and Bob Metcalfe — two people whose contributions have fundamentally shaped modern networking and computing. Also joining the discussion is Tom Coughlin\, IEEE President\, and Brian Berg\, IEEE History Committee Vice Chair. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWatch the event recording: https://ieeetv.ieee.org/channels/ieeetv-specials/ieee-milestone-celebration-the-office-of-the-future

SUMMARY:Text-to-Image AI in Design Research with Ashley Anderson
DESCRIPTION:For PCI Community member invitation only. \nTo be a member of our PCI community click here. \nGreetings People-Centered Internet Community: \nThis Sunday 21 May we welcome Ashley Anderson who will share work about Leveraging Text-to-Image AI in Design Research \nJoin us at 11:30 AM ET in the PCI Zoom room. \nAshley Anderson is an advanced PhD candidate in the College of Design at North Carolina State University. “Leveraging Text-to-Image AI in Design Research” will cover insights from ongoing dissertation research\, which explores the use of text-to-image AI within imagery-based interventions. Situated within an education context\, this work centers on developing a novel stereotype threat intervention for Black students in the first year of engineering. The intervention uses AI systems like DALL-E 2 and Midjourney as tools for visualizing personally relevant visual metaphors with the goal of reducing the harmful effects of stereotype threat while cultivating a sense of belonging and identity. \nWe look forward to having you with us.

SUMMARY:Incentivising Tech Companies for Actions in Narrowing Digital Divide: Learnings and Opportunities Forward
DESCRIPTION:With the global pandemic hitting the world since 2019\, we witness a fast change in social lifestyle and methods of doing business in our everyday lives. Beyond gender and ages\, people have become more dependent on digital technology in performing their official duties and personal matters. For example\, meetings have shifted from physical to digital\, running errands have become easier with ‘a single click’ within Online-to-Offline (O2O) platforms\, the boundaries between school classes and homework have narrowed down with learning activities could be done anywhere. With such increasing dependencies to digital tools in the past years\, the global economic transformation brought by the tech sector is forecasted to enable $5.5 trillion to $12.6 trillion in value globally US$ 12 trillion by 2030 globally. \nWhile it is acknowledged that digitalisation has brought positive changes to our world\, it must be noted as well that technology has made development gaps even more visible among different geographies all around the world. Challenges to key social aspect have also become apparent since the rapid penetration of the internet\, such as on the applicability human rights in the online space\, emerging new skills\, online child protection\, responsible artificial intelligence (AI)\, personal data protection\, etc. \nAcknowledging the growing domination of digital technology to our world\, regulatory landscape must be responsive in catching up with opportunities provided by this sector. Across the globe\, multilateral platforms have put ‘digitalisation’ as at core of priorities. In the run up of the world to have its first Global Digital Compact\, led by the UN\, other multilaterals such as The Indian G20 Presidency 2023 are calling for ‘Data for development’ to colour its annual thematic while the Japanese G7 Presidency is intending to put a focus on the promotion of trustworthy emerging technologies. \nTo champion inclusive digital transformation agenda worldwide\, governments must also consider that tech companies have important role to play in enabling digital inclusion. Hence\, the efforts to narrow digital divide must be done by joining hands with the corporate. It is within the purpose to this policy dialogue to explore the learnings and opportunities forward. \nThe objective of this policy dialogue is to consider key learnings and opportunities of creating an enabling policy environment that incentivises the tech sector to perform actions in narrowing digital divide. This session will explore how strengthened corporate accountability in the tech sector could support the governments’ efforts in universalising access to digital ecosystem to everyone. Having such policy in place would enable the tech sector to lead meaningful system change in the digital space and further to contribute to the accomplishment of the 2030 Global Goals and feed into recommendations to the UN Global Digital Compact. \nAll participants need to register to join the session via the session page (https://www.itu.int/net4/wsis/forum/2023/Agenda/Session/501 or bit.ly/WBA-WSIS2023).
