SUMMARY:Doug Hohulin\, "People-Centered Metaverse"
DESCRIPTION:Greetings People Centered Internet (PCI) Community members: \nOur next PCI Community call will be Sunday 13 February at 11:30 AM ET GMT-5 featuring Doug Hohulin\, a regular participant on our calls. He will share: \n  \n“Creating a People-Centered Metaverse of Abundance and Opportunity for All” \n  \nDoug will provide a short overview of what is the Metaverse and how to prepare for the changes in our world that are about to take place – and insight on how to create a positive people-centered metaverse for all. The Metaverse/XR/Spatial Web 3/Web 3D is going to be as disruptive to our world in the late 2020s as smartphones were in the 2010s and cell phones & PCs in the 2000s. \n  \nToday businesses and educators are struggling with Teams & Zoom meetings and XR is difficult to use.  But in the next three to five years\, metaverse technology could be as easy to use as a smartphone.  In 10 years\, smartglasses will replace the smartphone for a fully immersive experience that is indistinguishable from the physical world.   \nRather than a world of Hyper-Reality\, Doug is working to create a world of Consonance-Reality\, a world of calmness when needed yet a world of learning\, connecting\, information\, entertainment\, excitement\, and joy when desired (preview: youtube.com/watch?v=YJg02ivYzSs). \n  \nDoug is a Metaverse – XR – Web 3D Technology & Innovation Advisor focusing on healthcare\, education\, AV/transportation and 5G/6G projects. He worked at Nokia/Motorola for 33 years connecting people to the people\, information and things they value.  Doug worked as a Government Technology & Innovation Advisor to Aspen Institute fellow to create a policy memo for the Chief Innovation Officer at the Department of Labor that addresses XR in industry and is focusing on how the Metaverse will impact the future of work.  From 1G to 5G and even 6G\, XR/Metaverse\, AV\, AI\, Telepresence\, Distance Learning\, Telemedicine\, Smart City & Digital Health projects\, Doug focuses on strategy and business development for a more abundant and sustainable world for all.  Doug is working to connect the unconnected\, the elimination of the 1.35M road traffic deaths and to increase the digital economy & reduce the physical economy to minimize humanity’s carbon footprint.  He is part of the KC Health Innovation Team kcdigitaldrive.org/project/health-innovation-team/\, KC & TxDOT AV Task Forces\, Kansas University Cybersecurity Board\, University of Central Missouri (UCM) Gigabit Lab Advisory Board and a High School VR Hackathon Mentor and girlsteaminstitute.org/  Mentor.  He co-leads the KU school of Nursing AR/AR Animating Medical Manikin Team project that won 1st Prize in the AR/VR Hackathon to use XR to lower the cost of existing $30K-$200K Manikins Solutions. This team is building a coalition of Nursing schools in the KC metro areas to deploy 5G/XR technology for medical simulation and other applications. \nDoug has spoken on 5G\, 6G\, Metaverse/XR\, AI\, AV\, future of work & Cybersecurity to K-12\, University Students\, Customers\, Partners\, Government\, IEEE and other groups. One Presentation: 6G – Bridging the Physical-Digital-Biological World: When will there be 1 Billion 5G and VR Users. linkedin.com/pulse/21st-century-billions-doug-hohulin/ \nDoug Hohulin on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/doughohulin/ \n  \nFor PCI Community member invitation only. \nTo be a member of our PCI community click here.

SUMMARY:Digital Humanism Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:About the Series \nDigital humanism deals with the complex relationship between man and machine. It acknowledges the potential of Informatics and IT. At the same time\, it points to related apparent threats such as privacy violations\, ethical concerns with AI\, automation\, and loss of jobs\, and the ongoing monopolization on the Web. The Corona crisis has shown these two faces of the accelerated digitalization—we are in a crucial moment in time. \nFor this reason\, we started a new initiative—DIGHUM lectures—with regular online events to discuss the different aspects of Digital Humanism. We will have one or more speakers on a specific topic followed by a discussion\, or panel discussions\, depending on topic and speakers. The exact dates will be announced in our schedule at least two weeks before. \nThis crisis does seriously affect our mobility\, but it also offers the possibility to participate in events from all over the world—let’s take this chance to meet virtually. \nAccess \nTo access the Zoom conference\, click here (Password: 0dzqxqiy). All talks will also be streamed and recorded on the Digital Humanism YouTube channel. \nProgram

SUMMARY:Digital Humanism Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Antonio Casilli (School of telecommunications engineering | Polytechnic Institute of Paris)\nModerator: Enrico Nardelli (University of Roma ‘Tor Vergata’\, Italy) \n(Sociologist\, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Casilli): \nWhat is a ‘Truly Ethical’ Artificial Intelligence? An end-to-end approach to responsible and humane technological systems \n  \nAbout the Series \nDigital humanism deals with the complex relationship between man and machine.

SUMMARY:PCI Community Call - Students of Leadership with Jeffrey Page
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Sunday\, December 5th at 8:30 AM PT (11:30 AM ET) for a discussion about leadership with Jeffrey Page. \nJeffrey has spent much of his career studying what makes an effective leader and how leadership skills at every level are critical to the success of every organization. Jeffrey is very excited to engage with the PCI community to explore the topic of leadership with the vast leadership experience of this community. \nJeff Page’s book\, Becoming a Student of Leadership –Making Leadership a Practice\, approaches the subject of leadership as an exercise in perpetual self-reflection – and demonstrates a direct relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership ability. Jeff doesn’t offer a simple formula or set of rules for becoming an effective leader. He presents a series of stories\, meditations\, and essays that explore universal themes of leadership\, drawing on his 30-plus years of experience as a leader with anecdotes that will resonate with readers and help them with their own reflective paths to gaining self-awareness and becoming students of leadership. \nJeffrey Page’s Bio \nhttps://jeffrey.page/ \nWith over 30 years of professional experience building and leading high-performing teams\, Jeff Page is still working on his leadership practice. He is currently working as the vice president of operations for a small government IT consulting business\, Precise Software Solutions. Prior to his current work in the private sector\, Jeff spent over 27 years working for the federal government. He served as the chief operating officer at the Corporation for National and Community Service (now named AmeriCorps) from 2014 to 2017 and as budget director from 1998 to 2005. From 2005 to 2014\, Jeff worked as the chief financial officer for the Library of Congress. Jeff began his career as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Democratic Republic of Congo\, and he spent 12 years working with the Peace Corps – 10 in Africa and two at Peace Corps headquarters. \n  \nFor PCI Community member invitation only. \nTo be a member of our PCI community click here.

SUMMARY:Community Organized Event: Invitation to UN discussion on 3D Printing: Its Potential and Implications for International Security
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\,\n\nYou are invited to a conversation with the Japanese Permanent Representative to the UN\, UN Under-Secretary General Izumi Nakamitsu\, on 3D Printing: Its Potential and Implications for International Security. The event will occur from 1000-1100 ET this Thursday\, 02 December (0700-0800 Pacific).\n\nLike other emerging technologies\, 3D printing offers the prospects of new possibilities for progress and human uplift. As technology\, 3D printing does not pose a threat in and of itself. It has the capability to yield great benefits for society. However\, this capability can also be redirected for malign ends. \nMany of the same characteristics that make it valuable to legitimate manufacturers—speed to delivery\, on-demand production\, more efficient inventory management\, design innovation\, and lower barriers to entry into new markets—can be used for nefarious purposes\, including in ways that could have negative implications for international security. Given the further technological development of 3D printing and its real-world applications over the past few years\, this event will discuss the likely next steps and how the United Nations can play a constructive role\, including in the field of non-proliferation. \n\nhttps://stimsoncenter.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Sx86OH61R9KBUEpsUDTVVw?utm_source=Stimson+Center&utm_campaign=c010cef739-StD%2FTTS%2FTurtle+Bay+Webinar&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_15c3e20f70-c010cef739-4625020

SUMMARY:PCI’s Global Help Desk and the Vaccination Equity Consortium By Todd Hoskins\, Senior Fellow for the Global Help Desk
DESCRIPTION:Last month\, Microsoft publicly announced its commitment to the Vaccination Equity Initiative. In the last four weeks a new consortium has formed – the Vaccination Equity Consortium (VEC) – with Microsoft\, Amazon\, Dell\, Moderna\, GSK\, Pfizer\, Quest Diagnostics\, Easterseals\, United Way\, Kaiser Permanente\, the CDC Foundation\, the California Medical Health Reserve Corps\, and many more. PCI’s Global Help Desk is proud to be playing a key role in this group. \nOver the last decade\, there have been voices calling for more ambitious forms of public/private partnerships to address key global issues. Don Tapscott created momentum with the idea of Global Solutions Networks\, and Steve Waddell wrote a book on Global Action Networks. The idea is that we need broad networked collaborations that attend to complex needs that are both interconnected and contextual. Solutions need to be adaptable\, localized\, and coordinated\, with resources and strategies as diverse as the unique needs being addressed in each region. Governments\, community organizations\, corporations\, NGO’s\, and volunteers must learn to share knowledge and coordinate efforts. \nIn this case\, the universal need is greater than “shots in arms”–it’s equipping healthcare systems to move beyond a COVID-survival state by giving more people appropriate\, local access to vaccines. Imagine the wide variety of approaches across the globe to health records\, data sharing\, volunteer management\, connectivity\, communication\, and coordinating at the grassroots level. This is the challenge\, one that is technical\, complex\, and relational. \nWhat is the Global Help Desk’s role? “Not About Us Without Us” guides our journey to vaccine equity. GHD is both driving and evolving the scaffolding and framework for inclusive sustainable digital cooperation\, coordinating parties and actions to ensure ongoing trust\, recognizing that the future we want will be fueled by friendship–networks of affection.  We at PCI are working hard so that the evolving GHD makes sure the present is balanced with the future\, prioritizing the voices of the too often overlooked and underserved so their needs are known and addressed. \nBuilding on concepts that emerged at the very beginning of the Internet by Douglas Engelbart and evolved in the work of (US) Federal Health Futures: We are setting up interaction and engagement for local communities developing their network competencies so local community hubs operate as independent parts of the global network for Vaccine Equity. GHD is shepherding digital tools and services to recognize local community needs\,  knowledge\, people and assets\, and connect them to global expertise and resources. The work already underway at PCI’s Tribal Resource Center will be the first node of the Global Help Desk network with many more to come. \nThe world is moving: The G20 2021 High-Level Panel has called for a Global Pandemic Deal.  The VEC is emerging as the private-sector body that the Global Deal needs. We know that the success of this network is important in moving toward a post-COVID world\, but also important in bringing equity to center stage in the global digital transformation. \nPCI’s Global Help Desk helps build local capacity for digital transformation by playing the role of coordinator between networks\, governments\, organizations\, and volunteers. As a people-powered initiative of the People-Centered Internet\, GHD is committed to principles of JEDHI (justice\, equity\, diversity\, healing\, and inclusion)\, and supporting the sustainability of networked improvement communities across borders and boundaries. \nTo join our call on November 21st and to learn more about the Global Help Desk and the Vaccination Equity Consortium\, please reply to this email.
