SUMMARY:Global Observance of World Habitat Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:World Habitat Day is held on the first Monday of October and launches Urban October. The day centres around the global observance\, which is held in a different country each year with keynote speakers and roundtable discussions focused on a specific theme. World Habitat Day was first celebrated in 1986 in Nairobi\, Kenya\, with the theme ‘Shelter is my right’. \nOn 3 October 2022\, the Global Observance of World Habitat Day\, under the theme Mind the Gap. Leave No One and No Place Behind\, will look at the problem of growing inequality and challenges in cities and human settlements. \n\n\nEvent City and Country\nBalikesir\, Türkiye (Venue: Avlu Kongre ve Kültür Merkez – Art center)\n\n\n\nEvent Date\n\n3 October 2022\n\n\n\n\nMessages from the UN Secretary General and the Executive Director\n\n\n\n\nSG’s Message for the World Habitat Day\n\nEach year\, World Habitat Day focuses attention on the state of human settlements. This year’s theme – ‘Mind the Gap. Leave No One and No Place Behind’ – puts the spotlight on widening inequalities in living conditions across the world. A cascade of challenges – from climate chaos and conflicts to COVID-19 – is hitting the most vulnerable populations the hardest. \n\n\nEnglish\, Arabic\, Chinese\, French\, Russian\, Spanish\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nED’s Message for the World Habitat Day\n\nThe COVID pandemic\, recent conflicts and the climate emergency have reversed years of progress in our fight against poverty. Today we are witnessing the emergence of newly poor people – those of us who have fallen into poverty due to the FOUR Cs: Covid\, Conflict and Climate Crises. The UN-Habitat’s World Cities Report estimates that up to 163 million newly poor people now live in cities and urban areas. They have lost their income\, lack decent housing and cannot access basic services. \n\n\nEnglish\, Arabic\, Chinese\, French\, Spanish\, Russian\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWpNNKXJpoM[/embedyt]\n\n\n\n\n\nGlobal Observance Speeches and Presentations\n\n\n\nSpeech at the press conference in Istanbul\, Republic of Türkiye\, ahead of World Habitat Day 2022\n\nEnglish\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVideos\n\n\n\n[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8HJG8juBwI[/embedyt]\n\n\n\n\n\nWHD 2022 Programme\n\n\nWorld Habitat Day 2022 programme is found here \n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\nJoin us for the World Habitat Day celebration by registering here \n\n\n\n\nJoin the celebrations\n\n\nHigh-level opening ceremony of the global observance of World Habitat Day  \nFollow live feed on UN Web TV:\nhttps://media.un.org/en/asset/k1p/k1pkw87o5h \nJoin via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cAm91BCXSvKklzBK_i-Mhw \nRoundtable 1 discussion : A New Social Contract for Urban Resilience and Sustainability   \nFollow live feed on UN Web TV:\nhttps://media.un.org/en/asset/k1g/k1g4ye4t0r \nJoin via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83656582463?pwd=eGxQdTJlQm9LRXgxWU8vVGJ1SEpGQT09 \nRoundtable 2 discussion : Guiding Social Inclusion in Cities  \nFollow live feed on UN Web TV:\nhttps://media.un.org/en/asset/k11/k11j5keql2 \nJoin via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN__hOyH4LuRnGMKfiwSqhGAQ \nRoundtable 3 discussion : Don’t Leave the Youth Behind  \nFollow live feed on UN Web TV:\nhttps://media.un.org/en/asset/k1q/k1qc0kseum \nJoin via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83656582463?pwd=eGxQdTJlQm9LRXgxWU8vVGJ1SEpGQT09 \nRoundtable 4 discussion : Urban Regeneration: Social Value Creation \nhttps://media.un.org/en/asset/k16/k168103h0c \nJoin via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UejukgoETTCp6TZxGCQx3g \nClosing Ceremony of the Global Observance of the World Cities Day 2022 \nFollow live feed on UN Web TV:\nhttps://media.un.org/en/asset/k1l/k1lbwao711

SUMMARY:Report launch webinar | Financing mechanisms for locally-owned internet infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Watch the event on-demand.\nRead the report.\nSpeakers:\n\nJochai Ben-Avie (Connect Humanity)\nBen Matranga (Connectivity Capital)\nJane Coffin (Connect Humanity)\nBruce Patterson (EntryPoint Networks)\nCarlos Rey-Moreno (Association for Progressive Communications)\nShaun Pather (Zenzeleni)\nAnoop Nagendra (Connectivity Capital)\nChris Conder MBE (B4RN)\nJuan Peirano (Internet Society\n\n\nWe are pleased to invite you to the launch of the “Financing mechanisms for locally-owned internet infrastructure” report\, a new study that documents and analyzes the operating models and financing mechanisms that can enable community connectivity providers to expand internet access and build digital equity.   Across the world\, a growing number of community networks\, municipal networks and social enterprises are successfully connecting those who have historically been unserved or underserved\, especially in the areas where traditional for-profit companies choose not to invest. While these community connectivity providers are building solutions to the persistent digital divide\, almost all of them struggle to access capital.   This publication provides an overview of various network models while giving a deep look at how they can be financed sustainably to provide reliable\, affordable internet to more communities. The online launch will bring together experts and network builders to discuss the report and strategies that can fund community-centred internet networks. It will also be an opportunity to learn more about successful case studies and discuss recommendations for policymakers\, funders and network builders. The “Financing mechanisms for locally-owned internet infrastructure” report comes from a partnership between Association for Progressive Communications\, Connect Humanity\, Connectivity Capital\, and the Internet Society.

SUMMARY:Science Summit meeting on Sickle Cell
DESCRIPTION:Introduction \nAchieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for health in many countries in Africa will include addressing sickle cell disease (SCD)\, a chronic non-communicable disorder (NCD) Africa is the epicenter of the disease burden: an estimated 80% of patients live in Africa and more than 300\,000 new babies with SCD are born on the continent each year. Historically\, health systems in many regions have been ill-equipped to provide optimal preventative and therapeutic healthcare over the life-course of patients with SCD and the result has been high rates of mortality and severe morbidity beginning in early childhood. In this context\, the current era of scientific innovation holds promise for helping patients\, health workers\, policy makers\, and other stakeholders to make a sustained impact on population health as it relates to SCD.\nObjectives\nThe session will:\n• Educate stakeholders on state-of-the-art understanding of the SCD in Africa and major scientific activities underway that have both immediate and long-term implications for patient outcomes.\n• Outline how the outputs of basic biomedical science\, including the elucidation of genetic underpinnings of disease\, will translate to improved patient care.\n• Define key implementation research learnings and outstanding needs to assure successful delivery of newborn screening at large \nAbstract \nThis Session will focus on three critical areas of science: (a) Biomedical science to help better understand the nature of SCD in patients in Africa; (b) Implementation research to guide the effective delivery of interventions proven to save lives from SCD in Africa including newborn screening and distribution of existing medicines and interventions; (c) Partnerships in Research and development of new therapeutics . The focus will be on gene-based therapies that are designed to cure SCD.\nMuhimbili University of Health & Allied Sciences (MUHAS)\, Tanzania\, will convene this Session. MUHAS is part of SickleinAfrica\, a multinational consortium comprising national-level stakeholders in Tanzania\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Uganda\, Zimbabwe\, Zambia\, and Mali\, with coordinating centres in Tanzania and South Africa. MUHAS is also part of Sickle CHARTA\, A Consortium for Health\, Advocacy\, Research and Training fin Africa. The main goal is to reduce the burden of SCD through the generation and application of scientific knowledge\, and conducting research in Africa.\nTarget audience\nMulti-disciplinary stakeholders that are working to address SCD at country\, regional\, and global levels. Participants are anticipated to include patient advocates\, clinicians\, policy makers & other government officials\, researchers\, industry\, NGOs\, philanthropies\, and multilateral health organizations. \nExpected outcomes \nEducate stakeholders on state-of-the-art understanding of the SCD in Africa and major scientific activities underway that have both immediate and long-term implications for patient outcomes.\n• Outline how the outputs of basic biomedical science\, including the elucidation of genetic underpinnings of disease\, will translate to improved patient care.\n• Define key implementation research learnings and outstanding needs to assure successful delivery of newborn screening at large scale in Africa and the safe and effective distribution of approved medicines such as hydroxyurea that are proven to save lives and reduce severe morbidities.\n• Showcase current efforts to discover definitive gene therapy cures for SCD and explore the anticipated enablers and barriers to achieving widespread access for patients in Africa.\n• Recommend pragmatic approaches to cross-sector collaboration that will maximize the quantity and quality of research to address SCD in Africa with an emphasis on conducting research within Africa

As many technology companies and thought leaders have argued\, the goal is not to replace people\, but to empower them by making design choices that give humans control over technology.” \nBackground: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Shneiderman | “Ben Shneiderman (born August 21\, 1947) is an American computer scientist\, a Distinguished University Professor in the University of Maryland Department of Computer Science\, which is part of the University of Maryland College of Computer\, Mathematical\, and Natural Sciences at the University of Maryland\, College Park\, and the founding director (1983-2000) of the University of Maryland Human-Computer Interaction Lab. He conducted fundamental research in the field of human–computer interaction\, developing new ideas\, methods\, and tools such as the direct manipulation interface\, and his eight rules of design.”

SUMMARY:David Smith "The Augmented Conversation"
DESCRIPTION:Greetings PCI Community – our guest speaker this Sunday 24 July is David Smith\, Founder and CTO of Croquet. \n  \nHis topic: “The Augmented Conversation” \n  \nDoug Engelbert expressed the idea of augmenting human intellect\, not just for individuals\, but as a collaborative experience. We have been working on Croquet\, with the goal of creating a foundation that would enable such an augmentation of our ability to create\, explore\, understand and solve problems collaboratively.  We define the augmented conversation as follows: \n  \n1) A discussion within a group of users that is extraordinarily enhanced with the kinds of tools and capabilities that are only available with a computer. \n2) A computer AI is a full participant in this conversation. It allows us to jointly discuss and explore complex systems\, data sets\, and simulations as naturally and easily as we engage today. \n3) There is a guarantee of shared truth. The simulation I see must be the exact same as what you see. Anything I do to affect the shared simulation must also be accurately shared. If this is not the case\, then there is no guarantee that what you see and understand is the same as for me\, so you are unable to trust that communication channel. \n  \nDavid believes in the very near future virtual objects will soon populate our world will be as responsive and alive as a physical object. There won’t be a physical reality and a virtual or augmented reality. Soon and in development now\, there will only be a seamless\, multi-user reality. \n  \nAbout David A. Smith | CEO/Founder Croquet Corporation \n\n\nDavid Alan Smith Smith is the CTO and Founder of Croquet Corporation\, developing the Croquet Web-based Operating System. \nSmith is a computer scientist and entrepreneur who has focused on interactive 3D and using 3D as a basis for new user environments and entertainment. He built his first human machine design (HMD) in 1986 to study telepresence control of a remote robot arm using a Dataglove. \nSmith was a Senior Fellow at Lockheed Martin\, where he focused on next generation human centric computing and collaboration platforms. Before that\, Smith was the chief architect of the Croquet Project\, an open-source virtual world collaboration platform where he worked with Alan Kay (Turing Award) and David P Reed (created UDP\, co-created TCP/IP) and Andreas Raab (Squeak Smalltalk co-developer). \nIn 1987\, Smith created The Colony\, the first real time 3D adventure game/shooter. Smith developed Virtus Walkthrough in 1990\, the first real-time 3D design application for personal computers. Smith also co-founded Red Storm Entertainment with author Tom Clancy and co-created the Rainbow Six game franchise. David gave the keynote address at IEEE VR 2017. \n\nYou will receive a meeting notice with connection information later today from PCI Guests & Speakers Committee member Kacey Komloski. \nPlease join us.

SUMMARY:PCI Community Call: Arthur Brock: Transitioning into Information Age Economies & Web3 Approaches that Actually Scale
DESCRIPTION:For PCI Community member invitation only. \nTo be a member of our PCI community click here. \n  \nHello\, PCI Community Members. \nWe’re pleased to announce our speaker for Sunday 5 May: Arthur Brock \nArt’s topic: Transitioning into Information Age Economies & Web3 Approaches that Actually Scale \nBackground\nArthur Brock builds targeted currencies which shape the social dynamics of our emerging post-industrial economy. He has created more than a hundred designs for multi-currency systems and his software company has built and deployed dozens of those systems.\nInitially\, Arthur put his experience in Artificial Intelligence to use at GM\, Chrysler & Hughes\, but shifted his focus to building intelligence into social architectures rather than to computers. He started student-run schools and award-winning\, employee-run businesses and discovered the engine that runs these types of organizations involve specific patterns of incentives and feedback. He began to unlock secrets of the Social DNA by which people operate and the critical role of currencies for programming these patterns.\nArthur’s designs include currency systems for: collaborative scientific research\, sustainable fishery management\, corporate compensation plans\, employee stock options\, community-based economic development\, business barter and exchange\, triple-bottom-line trade credits\, open source software development\, customer loyalty programs\, water rights\, recirculating gift certificates\, community service\, employee performance management\, arts & culture development\, efficient resource sharing & management\, and community & environmental impact assessment. \nYou might know Art from some of his projects and companies (past or present):\nAgile Learning Centers\nEmerging Leader Labs\nCeptr\nStreamscapes\nNew Currency Frontiers\nMetaCurrency Project\nFlowplace\nLocal Capital Summit\nLifeblood Design\nGeek Gene\nMile High Business Alliance\nTargeted Currencies Network\nDream Team Technologies\nArtful Solutions or Artful Internet Solutions\nThe Foundation for Inventive Learning\nThe Journal of Integral Living \nHere are some additional links to Art and his work: \nhttps://www.artbrock.com/ \nhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/artbrock/ \nhttps://artbrock.medium.com/ \n  \nWe hope you are able to join us!
