“Douglas Engelbart’s Augmentation Research Center (the ARC Lab) at SRI and Vint Cerf at Len Kleinrock’s lab at UCLA were connected to the first two nodes of the Internet (then known as ARPANET). It has been my honor and privilege to work with the two seminal figures that ushered in the era of the Internet which is now changing the future of work, play, family, old age, education, health and communication between humans.
Both Vint and I were interviewed for this documentary on the work of Turing Award Winner Douglas Engelbart, recipient of his nation’s highest honor in technology – the Technology Medal of Honor. I served as Chair of Doug’s Core Planning Committee from 2000 to 2004, a period which saw him keynote the World Library Summit in Singapore in 2002 and the Co-Evolution Symposium at IBM’s Almaden Lab in 2003 (see below).
He also spoke, at that time, at the San Jose State Department of Art, and the transcript of his remarks were downloaded over 50,000 times in a single week – some people asking if it was an April Fools Day joke – did someone really usher in the key pillars of modern computing at a 1968 event called the Mother of all Demos?
